Giovanni Soldini and Ferrari unveiled the Hypersail project this Wednesday — a 100-foot flying monohull with which he aims to break the round-the-world sailing record. Launch planned for 2026.
It will be a first in offshore racing. On Wednesday, June 25, Giovanni Soldini and his sponsor Ferrari unveiled the Hypersail project: a 100-foot monohull that is 100% flying thanks to T-shaped foils and lifting surfaces on both the keel and the rudder. “It is the meeting of different cultures and advanced technologies that allowed us to design a revolutionary sailboat,” commented the 59-year-old Italian skipper.
For over a year now, the team from Guillaume Verdier’s design office has been working on designing this 30-meter-long monohull with a 40-meter air draft, currently under construction in Italy, and set to be launched in 2026.
With this new boat, the winner of the 1999 Around Alone race (a solo round-the-world race with stopovers), who has spent many years sailing multihulls (Orma and MOD70), will attempt a new record: the crewed round-the-world record, known as the Jules Verne Trophy. A record never before attempted with a monohull — and certainly not a flying one.
