Following her launch earlier this year, Gitana 18 – Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/strong> has entered one of the most important stages in the life of any high-performance racing yacht: sea trials.<\/p>\n

For the design team, this marks the transition from years of engineering, simulation and construction to the real-world validation of an entirely new offshore flying platform.<\/p>\n

The Beginning of a New Phase<\/h3>\n

Launching a yacht is often seen as the culmination of a project. In reality, it is only the beginning.<\/p>\n

The first weeks at sea are dedicated to understanding the behaviour of the yacht, validating design assumptions and progressively expanding its operating envelope. Every sailing session generates valuable information that helps the design office and technical team refine both the boat and its systems.<\/p>\n

For a project as ambitious as Gitana 18, this development phase is an essential part of the design process.<\/p>\n

Learning From Every Mile<\/h3>\n

Unlike a production yacht, a prototype of this level continues to evolve after launch.<\/p>\n

Each navigation provides thousands of data points covering structural loads, foil behaviour, flight stability, sail performance and control systems. These are continuously analysed and compared with the numerical models developed throughout the design programme.<\/p>\n

The objective is not simply to verify that the yacht performs as expected, but to understand how it behaves across an increasingly wide range of offshore conditions.<\/p>\n

Progressive Flight Development<\/h3>\n

One of the priorities during the first sea trials has been the gradual exploration of Gitana 18’s flight characteristics.<\/p>\n

Rather than immediately pursuing maximum speeds, the team is progressively validating the behaviour of the appendages, control systems and overall platform balance.<\/p>\n

These first sessions are essential for developing confidence in the yacht while refining the countless adjustments required to exploit the full potential of a new Ultim.<\/p>\n

Recent footage released by Gitana Team already illustrates the first sustained flying phases, confirming the promising behaviour of the platform during its initial development programme.<\/p>\n

Design Never Stops<\/h3>\n

Modern yacht design does not end when the boat leaves the shipyard.<\/p>\n

The launch simply opens a new cycle of observation, analysis and optimisation, where naval architects, engineers, builders and sailors continue to work together to improve the platform.<\/p>\n

For Guillaume Verdier Design, this iterative approach has become a defining principle across every major offshore project. Numerical simulations provide the starting point, but it is the miles sailed at sea that ultimately validate \u2014 and often enrich \u2014 the original design.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n

Gitana 18 will continue her development programme over the coming months as the team gradually expands the yacht’s operating envelope ahead of her competitive debut.<\/p>\n

Every navigation contributes to a better understanding of one of the most advanced offshore foiling trimarans ever designed.<\/p>\n
