Several members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1&amp;id=7c85b2b084&amp;e=5abcc047f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1%26id%3D7c85b2b084%26e%3D5abcc047f7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1777132889894000&amp;usg=AOvVaw20d9gqAAtbYSAL76kSirFk\">Guillaume Verdier naval architecture firm<\/a>, which designed the yacht, break down the concept for\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Launched at the end of 2022, Ferrari\u2019s Hypersail project is entering its final stretch, with the boat set to leave the yard\u00a0<strong>in the second half of this year<\/strong>. Following the images released this week by the\u00a0<em>Scuderia<\/em>, more details have emerged about this future machine, whose project lead has recently changed:\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Soldini<\/strong>, who initiated the project (<a href=\"https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1&amp;id=df98786629&amp;e=5abcc047f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1%26id%3Ddf98786629%26e%3D5abcc047f7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1777132889894000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2eN09F4GrCoEr79yCeAWMe\"><em>see our article<\/em><\/a>) \u2013 contacted by\u00a0<em>Sailorz<\/em>, he declined to comment on the reasons for his departure \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1&amp;id=effa9f0353&amp;e=5abcc047f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1%26id%3Deffa9f0353%26e%3D5abcc047f7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1777132889894000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0wNH6lxruJIT_nBNNQgKRj\">has been replaced<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1&amp;id=984abaaffa&amp;e=5abcc047f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1%26id%3D984abaaffa%26e%3D5abcc047f7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1777132889894000&amp;usg=AOvVaw01PuM4hMyjwZajDMPIz8kO\">Enrico Voltolini<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first key takeaway is that Hypersail is indeed\u00a0<strong>a 100-foot foiling monohull<\/strong>, a decision made early on.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe multihull option was never seriously explored; we didn\u2019t want to encroach on the Ultim space, and this concept of a large foiling offshore monohull \u2013 something like an offshore version of the AC75 \u2013 had been on Guillaume\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>(Verdier)<em>\u00a0mind for a long time,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0<strong>Erwan Tymen<\/strong>, naval engineer and collaborator of the designer.\u00a0<em>\u201cEspecially as Ferrari wanted something truly unique, something that had never been seen before.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For architect\u00a0<strong>Lo\u00efc Goepfert<\/strong>, the performance gains seen in the latest generations of Imocas also pointed in this direction:\u00a0<em>\u201cWhen you looked at Charlie\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0(Dalin)\u00a0<em>incredible speeds despite class rule constraints, you realised that with a \u2018no-limit\u2019 Imoca, performance could be pushed much further. Ultimately,\u00a0<strong>the project evolved towards something closer to an America\u2019s Cup-style hull<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cA trimaran central hull grafted under a conventional hull\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Indeed, this 100-foot hull \u2013\u00a0<em>\u201cWe capped it at 100 feet because Ferrari wanted to retain eligibility for races such as the Sydney Hobart,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0<strong>V\u00e9ronique Soul\u00e9<\/strong>, engineer specialising in CFD and performance analysis \u2013 shares several similarities with an AC75 hull. Notably, a lower-section bustle, which leads Erwan Tymen to say:\u00a0<em>\u201c<strong>It is<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a trimaran central hull grafted beneath a conventional hull<\/strong>. The bustle helps reduce drag both in flight and in skimming mode<\/em>\u00a0(when the boat is just touching the water<em>), while the upper hull helps initiate speed to generate some RM\u00a0<\/em>(righting moment, hence power)<em>\u00a0when the foils are not yet working or if the boat stops.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Around twenty hull designs were run through full test\u00a0mode in the simulator developed by\u00a0<strong>Benjamin Muyl<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em>\u201cWe practically went through the entire alphabet,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0smiles Erwan Tymen \u2013 tested notably by offshore sailors (<strong>Giovanni Soldini<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Le Peutrec<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Karine Fauconnier<\/strong>), as well as Australian sailor\u00a0<strong>Glenn Ashby<\/strong>, brought in for his America\u2019s Cup experience.<\/p>\n<p>The deck design raised fewer questions:\u00a0<em>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0<strong>an Imoca-style deck<\/strong>, with transverse curvature to provide structure,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Erwan Tymen.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe design was really driven by aerodynamics and structure, while freeboard height was dictated by stability \u2013 you need volume to remain stable if the boat heels.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The deck is\u00a0<strong>entirely covered with solar panels<\/strong>, which will serve as the primary onboard energy source (100 square metres).\u00a0<em>\u201cBuilding a boat capable of generating her own energy was a key requirement from the outset. Ferrari has put a huge amount of work into this energy package,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Lo\u00efc Goepfert.<\/p>\n<p>What about the cockpit, aerodynamic and fully enclosed, designed for a crew of 10 to 12 sailors?\u00a0<em>\u201cCompared to an Ultim, it\u2019s completely different,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Erwan Tymen.\u00a0<em>\u201cOn an Ultim, it\u2019s more like a corridor; here, it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>much larger, with five pedestals to generate the required power<\/strong>, because loads are significantly higher.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>A double-skin mainsail<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Loads will also be high on\u00a0<strong>the rig, one of Hypersail\u2019s major innovations<\/strong>, featuring a 40-metre mast with outriggers and\u00a0<strong>a thick, double-skin mainsail<\/strong>\u00a0which, according to V\u00e9ronique Soul\u00e9, underwent extensive CFD testing in the simulator (with\u00a0<strong>Romain Garo<\/strong>), as well as real-world testing at smaller scale on a Tornado with\u00a0<strong>Romaric Neyhousser<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe double skin delivers improved performance, with\u00a0<strong>a more efficient profile generating greater low pressure<\/strong>, and therefore more lift.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Erwan Tymen adds:\u00a0<em>\u201cSince the goal is to match Ultim-level performance with a keel,\u00a0<strong>you need a more powerful engine<\/strong>. Either you go with a very tall mast, which creates massive loads, or a more compact but more efficient rig. For us, that was the winning choice. Glenn Ashby and Team New Zealand brought all their expertise to\u00a0<strong>adapt this rig for offshore use<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, America\u2019s Cup experience influenced the appendage design, particularly\u00a0<strong>the retractable T-foils<\/strong>, which compared to L-foils\u00a0<em>\u201callow for better load distribution,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0notes V\u00e9ronique Soul\u00e9.\u00a0Their span is striking: Ferrari announces\u00a0<strong>a 20-metre beam with foils deployed<\/strong>.\u00a0<em>\u201cInitially, we wanted something easy to berth in harbours, but ultimately performance drove the decisions \u2013 so we\u2019ll just berth slightly sideways,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she smiles.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe explored a lot of options on this,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds\u00a0<strong>Math\u00e9o Sacaze<\/strong>, heavily involved in the simulator work.\u00a0<em>\u201cSome weeks we were close to Imoca-style foils, others closer to AC75s; in the end, we settled on\u00a0<strong>a design closer to the Cup<\/strong>, with two tips of very different surface areas.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Foils intrinsically linked to the keel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For the designers, the foils could not be separated from the canting keel, also very deep (<strong>draft is 6 metres<\/strong>) and fitted with an impressive wing and flap on the fin, ensuring everything is\u00a0<em>\u201cfully adjustable in handling and trimming \u2013 you can go right, left, push up or down; the hydraulic control system behind this is extraordinary,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he adds.<\/p>\n<p>For Guillaume Verdier,\u00a0<em>\u201cthe concept was to\u00a0<strong>deliver a stable offshore platform<\/strong>, so the original idea was to support the boat on her keel with large wings (like a foil windsurf board) and, to counteract heeling moment, to use\u00a0<strong>a leeward T-foil<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe balance between the main foil<\/em>\u00a0(in the water)\u00a0<em>and the wing on the keel is really the defining feature of the appendage configuration,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0confirms Erwan Tymen, while Lo\u00efc Goepfert adds:\u00a0<em>\u201cIn Imoca, we\u2019ve clearly seen that larger foils improve performance on angles requiring righting moment. However, we struggled on downwind VMG, where balance was harder to achieve. With class rule limitations, we addressed this using the \u2018half foil\u2019 concept, with both foils partly in the water. Here, we didn\u2019t want that due to drag considerations. The solution lies in a compromise between loads on the foil and on the large keel wings. It was\u00a0<strong>a massive engineering challenge<\/strong>\u00a0to find materials and technical solutions allowing these huge foils \u2013 heavier than anything seen before \u2013 to withstand extreme loads.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cTargeting 1,000 miles a day\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The single rudder will also endure significant loads, with an impressive size of 5.50 metres.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt had to be deep enough to\u00a0<strong>remain safe regardless of flight height in waves<\/strong>. We wanted to avoid a situation where, as in Cup boats, losing rudder grip becomes critical,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Math\u00e9o Sacaze.\u00a0<strong>Why only one rudder?<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cPrimarily due to the hull shape with the bustle, it needed to be positioned behind it,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0answers Erwan Tymen.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe could have considered twin rudders on the sides, but firstly we wanted to protect it behind the keel, and secondly it would have meant larger blades, adding weight and drag.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For Lo\u00efc Goepfert,\u00a0<em>\u201cVPPs always push for the smallest possible rudder, as it only generates drag. We tried to remain reasonable, but I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if, during the boat\u2019s life, this rudder is reduced in span and depth. There will be optimisation loops.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Optimisation loops are also planned for control systems, an area handled by Ferrari teams who, drawing on their F1 expertise, have developed\u00a0<strong>an automated flight control system<\/strong>. As Math\u00e9o Sacaze explains:\u00a0<em>\u201cThey are implementing predictive models that allow the pilot to anticipate what will happen. Activating flight control can\u00a0<strong>boost performance by 10 to 20%<\/strong>. When you start gaining 3\u20134 knots on average in rough seas, it becomes highly significant, even if it consumes a lot of energy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So what performance can be expected from this Hypersail, which should take off from 10\u201312 knots of wind and is designed to fly higher than an Ultim?
