{"id":8862,"date":"2025-09-23T09:51:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/?p=8862"},"modified":"2025-09-23T09:51:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:51:47","slug":"biotherm-claims-the-ocean-race-europe-on-guillaume-verdier-designed-foiler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/en\/biotherm-claims-the-ocean-race-europe-on-guillaume-verdier-designed-foiler\/","title":{"rendered":"Biotherm claims The Ocean Race Europe on Guillaume Verdier-designed foiler!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Article-abstract\"><strong>Paul Meilhat and his crew on Biotherm are the runaway winners of the second edition of The Ocean Race Europe after adding their fourth leg win in five starts early this morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"richtext\">\n<p>The French skipper and his crew \u2013\u00a0Am\u00e9lie Grassi and Benjamin Ferr\u00e9 of France and the Spanish sailor Carlos Manera \u2013 cruised to victory in Leg 5, from Genoa to Boka Bay in Montenegro, arriving just over an hour ahead of Team Holcim-PRB skippered by Rosalin Kuiper.<\/p>\n<p>With only a coastal race to come next Saturday, this leaves Meilhat and his team in an unassailable lead in the overall rankings ahead of second-placed Paprec Ark\u00e9a skippered by Yoann Richomme of France, who are just half a point in front of Team Holcim-PRB.<\/p>\n<p>For Meilhat, this was the most satisfying of wins in a race that he has planned for and targeted for several years. This started by taking part in the last The Ocean Race around the world in 2023, when Biotherm finished fourth at the end of what turned out to be a testing but invaluable learning experience on a new boat.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEverything has been building up over the past three years since we started taking part in The Ocean Race. It\u2019s a very good memory, even if it was difficult because the boat was new and we didn\u2019t know it well,\u201d<\/em>said a delighted Meilhat, who also finished fifth in the last Vend\u00e9e Globe on his Guillaume Verdier-designed foiler.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnd today we focus on what really matters,\u201d<\/em>he added,<em>\u00a0\u201cWe know this is sport and everyone goes in the same direction. I was super-motivated for this race \u2013 I wanted to win it, but everyone pulled in the same direction. There&#8217;s a lot of pride in seeing all these people working together and winning today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With that background, it was no surprise that Biotherm arrived at Boka Bay in almost pristine condition at the end of a tough, five-week, 4,500-nautical mile race around Europe that has seen his team break almost nothing on board and deal with the challenges of the stopovers impeccably.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe had this goal which was ambitious but achievable,\u201d<\/em>explained Meilhat.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe prepared a lot for it \u2013\u00a0technically, organisationally and logistically. Nothing was left to chance. It was top-level both ashore and at sea\u2026we went for it with everything we had, putting in all the resources. It worked and it\u2019s truly fantastic and now we\u2019ll be able to take a bit of time to finally celebrate because, up until now, no one has really let go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-1030x686.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-1030x686.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-2048x1364.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-1500x999.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.guillaumeverdier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/QPTR07-705x470.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Biotherm\u2019s win was based on smart sailing from a happy crew who took maximum points from the first four mid-leg Scoring Gates. Key roles were played by Meilhat and Grassi, alongside Sam Goodchild of Great Britain, who sailed as navigator on the first four legs, and the Australian-Brit Jack Bouttell, who sailed on the first two legs. But the boat was also ideally configured for this race, a contest that rewards fast upwind sailing and rapid response to lightwind transitions.<\/p>\n<p>In Leg 5, the Mediterranean in September threw everything at the crews on a course around Sicily \u2013 the lightest of light airs, super-fast downwind foiling, thunderstorms and torrential rain, and a series of transitions when Meilhat and his team focused on trying to stay in the game.\u00a0<em>\u201cAt each transition we had to fight hard because if you \u2018miss the bus\u2019, you can quickly lose 150 miles,\u201d<\/em>said Meilhat.<em>\u00a0\u201cWe constantly kept the pressure on ourselves to stay with the leaders.
