The crew led by Paul Meilhat dominated the race with remarkable consistency. With victories in four of the five stages (Legs 1, 2, 3 and 5) and leading through four of the five scoring gates, Biotherm delivered a nearly perfect performance….<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having secured overall victory even before Saturday\u2019s\u00a0Boka Bay Coastal\u00a0Race, here\u2019s a look at the multiple factors that enabled their success.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s become a familiar sight: the Biotherm crew celebrating at the finish, smiling faces on deck, and the little blue boat topping the tracker. This complete domination is perhaps best summed up by their rivals:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve delivered a masterclass from start to finish,\u201d said Corentin Horeau. \u201cA superb performance,\u201d added Boris Herrmann (Team Malizia). \u201cThey were faster and smarter with their strategy.\u201d Thomas Ruyant (Allagrande Mapei Racing) went further: \u201cThey were just on another level \u2013 the right crew, the right boat, the right game plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, as he reflected on the campaign, Paul Meilhat was quick to point out that this victory was \u201cthe result of a multitude of factors.\u201d Here are some of them.<\/p>\n

A Clear Objective from Day One<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI was hugely motivated by this race – The Ocean Race Europe,\u201d Paul explained. \u201cI really wanted to win it \u2013 but what was amazing is that the whole team shared that same drive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-skipper Am\u00e9lie Grassi echoed the sentiment: \u201cEven if we didn\u2019t expect this kind of dominance, we definitely came here to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the start of the season, The Ocean Race Europe was the team\u2019s number one goal, and Biotherm chose not to compete in the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or this autumn to stay fully focused.<\/p>\n

The campaign was carefully planned for maximum performance. The boat was relaunched later in the season to allow the team some well-deserved rest after Paul\u2019s fifth place in the Vend\u00e9e Globe. The crew also trained in Sweden before heading to Kiel, taking time to get familiar with the Baltic and hit the ground running when the race began.<\/p>\n

A Boat Made for This Course<\/strong><\/p>\n

If Biotherm seemed ‘a step ahead’ (as Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry of Paprec Ark\u00e9a put it), it was also thanks to a boat perfectly suited to the conditions. The Verdier-designed IMOCA, launched in 2022, proved agile and quick in the light airs and flat seas encountered on the route.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur boat is really designed for this type of racing,\u201d\u00a0Meilhat\u00a0says unapologetically. \u201cIt\u2019s very fast in transitions, in light winds, on flat water.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

A Winning Mindset<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s amazing is that even when they rotated crew, the energy and the spirit on board stayed exactly the same,\u201d said Corentin Horeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s true we had a great dynamic and good energy on board,\u201d said Am\u00e9lie Grassi. \u201cThat allowed us to make decisions calmly and with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

This mindset, inspired by Paul Meilhat, made the difference. \u201cHe always strikes the right balance between discussion and making a clear call when it\u2019s needed,\u201d explained Sam Goodchild in Cartagena.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou trust him immediately, which makes you trust yourself \u2013 and everything clicks,\u201d added Benjamin Ferr\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Jack Bouttell and Carlos Manera also played key roles in the collective effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re building strong bonds \u2013 we\u2019re becoming friends,\u201d Am\u00e9lie confided after one finish.<\/p>\n

Relentless Consistency<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cohesion on board and the boat\u2019s efficiency meant Biotherm spent most of the race at the front. The crew won four of the five scoring gates, leading at all the coastal gates except for Sardinia, where Paprec Ark\u00e9a briefly overtook them in the final leg.<\/p>\n

And of course, by\u00a0winning four of the five offshore legs, Biotherm maximized their points haul.<\/p>\n

But what really stood out was their persistence and consistency \u2013 staying calm under pressure and seizing every opportunity to take, or retake, the lead when it was available.<\/p>\n

To the point that even before they\u00a0reached Boka Bay, the team had fully seized control of the leaderboard and never let go.<\/p>\n

Out of a possible 52 points, Biotherm collected 48 \u2013 a clear sign of their supremacy.<\/p>\n

Shared Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n

The strength of the project goes beyond the sailors on board. Paul has built a cohesive and highly effective team, and the boat reached the finish without major damage, ‘working perfectly’ as\u00a0Meilhat put it.<\/p>\n

This ability to get the best from\u00a0his boat \u2013 already seen in the Vend\u00e9e Globe \u2013 shows the professionalism and experience of the entire team Meilhat has assembled – on and off the water.<\/p>\n

Their participation in The Ocean Race 2022-23 (finishing third) was a key shared experience that also helped them level up.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though we have great memories, it was tough for us,\u201d Paul said. \u201cWe had technical problems and we were discovering everything\u00a0– the crew, the race, the organisation. Everything we learned then is helping us today to be calmer, more efficient, and more focused on what matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is a team that is aligned and determined. \u201cNow everyone is heading in the same direction,\u201d\u00a0Meilhat said.<\/p>\n

Biotherm\u2019s victory in The Ocean Race Europe,\u00a0already secure ahead of the final coastal race, naturally opens doors for the future. Before the start in August, Paul Meilhat had reminded everyone that their partnership with Biotherm runs until the end of this year:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to be back for The Ocean Race,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n

Thanks to this summer triumph, the team has the perfect springboard to look ahead with confidence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
