In Brest on Wednesday\u00a0<\/i>Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/i>Elodie Bonafous<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/i>formalized<\/i><\/span>\u00a0the launch of \u00a0<\/i>Horizon 29 Offshore Racing team<\/i><\/b>\u00a0which is aiming for the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028 with a new Verdier design which expected to launch in January 2025. Tip & Shaft tells you more.<\/i><\/p>\n

While this new project was made official on Wednesday, it is an idea which has been running\u00a0around\u00a0for a few years in head of\u00a0Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner<\/span>, general manager and head of sailing programs for the group of the same name founded in 1948 by his grandfather.\u00a0\u201cIn fact,<\/i>\u00a0it has been there since the day after Yann Eli\u00e8s<\/i><\/b>\u00a0arrived in Les Sables d\u2019Olonne in 2017,<\/i>\u00a0he explains.\u00a0Overall we were very happy with the results of this Vend\u00e9e Globe and I wanted to return. I had looked closely at things for the last Vend\u00e9e and in the end I was a bit frustrated not to be there, and for 2024, we felt we could not get a project up to at least the level, even above, what we had with Yann, so that\u2019s\u00a0<\/i>why we preferred to focus on 2028.<\/i><\/b>\u201c<\/i><\/p>\n

The project really gathered momentum over the last year, Qu\u00e9guiner starting to discuss it more and more with\u00a0Elodie Bonafous<\/b>, who last year took over the colors of the group from Tanguy Le Turquais on the Figaro Beneteau circuit. \u201cI always knew that the Vend\u00e9e Globe fascinated the Qu\u00e9guiner family and that Bertrand had been frustrated not to have been on the last race\u201d,<\/i>\u00a0she comments.\u00a0\u201c<\/i>He told me before the Solitaire du Figaro that he wanted to set up for the 2028<\/i><\/b>, so that put a little pressure on me. I didn\u2019t know what his plans were in terms of the boat and the skipper, but I think the fact that I had a great season<\/i>\u00a0[12th on the Solitaire, including a third place on the last leg, 9th in the French solo Offshore championship Editor\u2019s note]\u00a0weighed tipped the balance, I was certainly not the only one on his list.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The MD of the Qu\u00e9guiner group further explains: \u201cTo begin with I didn\u2019t have a skipper in mind, but in the end, there was no need to do look around.\u00a0<\/i>Last season with Elodie led me to propose the project to her<\/i><\/b>. She is a rising star of offshore racing, she has proven herself, she is very ambitious, the choice was obvious.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to wait\u201d<\/i><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the end of January 2023 Bonafous who is from the bay of Morlaix was told of the green light, while at the same time, Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner\u00a0moves forwards the ideas of what boat, by approaching MerConcept<\/b>.\u00a0\u201cWe started talking to him at the end of last year, there was a good feeling between us from the start,<\/i>\u201d confirms\u00a0Thibault Garin<\/b>, deputy general manager of Fran\u00e7ois Gabart\u2019s company.\u00a0\u201cWe quickly agreed on a plan the same as we have done with\u00a0<\/i>V and B-Monbana-Mayenne,\u00a0<\/i>that is to say we build only.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The boat build will begin in July and it will be\u00a0a Guillaume Verdier design<\/b>. None of the individuals we spoke to would be drawn on whether it will be built from new molds or in those already used at MerConcept (Apivia<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0V and B-Monbana-Mayenne<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0Macif<\/i>\u00a0that is to be launched this Saturday, June 24), holding back on the announcement of technical details until just\u00a0\u201cbefore the holidays\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 according to Thibault Garin. According to our information\u00a0the idea of a sistership of Dalin\u2019s new Macif is very much in the running<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Asked about the boat choices Bonafous replied: \u201cI can\u2019t say anything about the boat, but\u00a0<\/i>what really was key for us was the choice of the team that we wanted to build it<\/i><\/b>. I\u2019ve never done an Imoca, I\u2019m not capable of making decisions on technical and architectural choices, so we said to ourselves that we had to rely on people with experience. That is why the collaboration with MerConcept which has built high-performance boats which have had very few technical problems.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Is there not an element of risk in choosing a design now even though the next Vend\u00e9e Globe has not even started and some new boats for it have still not been sailed? \u201cGiven that I\u2019m a novice,\u00a0<\/i>the main criterion was that I had to know my boat perfectly<\/i><\/b>, so we didn\u2019t want to wait,\u201d r<\/i>eplied the sailor.\u00a0\u201cWe may not have the changes that might happen after the Vend\u00e9e Globe, but it doesn\u2019t matter, we know that whatever happens we will have a high-performance boat that I can use to 100% of its potential.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A \u201cpossible<\/i>\u201d Ocean Race<\/h2>\n

The Verdier design, whose hull and deck will be subcontracted to CDK Technologies in Port-la-For\u00eat before assembly at MerConcept,\u00a0will be launched in early 2025<\/b>, which makes Thibault Garin say: \u201cIt\u2019s going to take a slightly longer time than usual<\/i><\/b>, quite comfortable really, especially as it spans a generally slow period for building Imocas, it\u2019s a great opportunity for our offshore racing entity.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that the project has been announced, Horizon 29 Course au large is going\u00a0to look for a team<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 \u201cI have already received messages from people interested in working with us<\/i>\u201c, smiles Elodie Bonafous \u2013 the priority being a technical director, but also of a place to work from.\u00a0\u201c<\/i>The desire to stay in Finist\u00e8re is very strong<\/i><\/b>\u201c<\/i>, comments Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner,\u00a0the choice will be between Port-la-For\u00eat and Concarneau, Elodie Bonafous considering that\u00a0\u201cit is important to stay close to MerConcept to potentially continue to work with them once the boat is in the water.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

What about funding?\u00a0\u201c<\/i>It\u2019s not a Qu\u00e9guiner project<\/i><\/b>\u201c<\/i>, assures the general manager of the group who specifies that the construction of the Imoca, to a cost that he does not want to reveal, is financed by\u00a0\u201c<\/i>a family investment company<\/i><\/b>\u201c<\/i>\u00a0which brings together his parents, he and his younger brother Cl\u00e9ment who, in 2020,\u00a0succeeded father Claude<\/span>\u00a0as president of the group. The operating budget, as yet not fixed, will be provided by partners which Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner is looking for, but not ruling out engaging the family group. \u201cI am in discussion with my brother,\u00a0<\/i>the Qu\u00e9guiner group may become a partner in the project<\/i><\/b>, in the same way that it supports other sports such as football or other events such as the Vieilles Charrues.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

As for 2024 for Elodie Bonafous will\u00a0do a season in Figaro again and hopes to\u00a0get onto the Imocas to become familiar with these boats. Then the program\u00a0should include all the races on the Imoca calendar, including\u00a0probably The Ocean Race Europe in the summer of 2025<\/b>. What about The Ocean Race during the winter of 2026\/2027 ? \u201cIt\u2019s possible<\/i>\u201c, answers Bertrand Qu\u00e9guiner, who, when asked about sporting ambitions, adds:\u00a0\u201cThis project is totally different from the one we had with Yann. With a boat coming out of MerConcept and four years to allow Elodie to prepare,\u00a0<\/i>it doesn\u2019t feel pretentious for to me to say that we\u2019re aiming for a podium.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n

What does she think?\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve always said that I wanted to go on my first Vend\u00e9e Globe with the aim of performance with a latest-generation boat to fight for the top places. I didn\u2019t think I would have such a project so quickly in my career,\u00a0<\/i>I know that the step up is a big one\u00a0<\/i><\/b>because I\u2019ve only been racing offshore for four years, but I have five years ahead of me, I\u2019ll be able to take on this project methodically and I will get to the Vend\u00e9e Globe start knowing my boat well,\u00a0<\/i>it\u2019s an incredible opportunity.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
